Video Surveillance (3)

Video surveillance or CCTV (closed circuit television) comfortably accounts for the biggest segment of the security technology market.

Surveillance cameras capture and transmit images back to a control room – or even remotely to a smartphone – where they are recorded onto an NVR, DVR or – increasingly – to the cloud. IP or network cameras are increasingly widespread but analogue cameras remain popular. There are bullet cameras and dome cameras, as well as thermal cameras or lowlight cameras.

Resolutions have soared in recent years, with HD, 4K and even 7K cameras emerging. It’s also becoming possible to cover wider areas with fewer cameras thanks to sophisticated PTZ cameras and innovations like fisheye lenses and 360-degree cameras.

Video surveillance cameras are increasingly harnessed for applications beyond crime detection, including traffic monitoring, crowd control and finding operational efficiencies in retail.
