Community project will benefit Bolton residents

4 Aug 2017

Residents of a Bolton social housing estate are benefiting from a landscape improvement project delivered by staff from Glendale, which has breathed new life into a disused piece of land.

Nine cherry trees are 278 Hawthorne hedges have been planted on the Bolton at Home estate on Johnson Fold Avenue, by members of the green service company's local team, who gave up their spare time to complete the project.

They were also joined by senior management staff Alan Wilkins, regional director for the north, Mike Brunskill, sales and marketing director, and Ben White, head of business development.

The team cleared the land, which had fallen into disuse following the demolition of a building, before laying new topsoil, planting the trees and reseeding the land, in addition to adding fencing and planting shrubs and hedging plants.

The landscape project was designed by John Nuttall, director of landscapes at EPD, Environment Planning and Design (part of Parkwood Consultancy Services Ltd), and managed by Glendale supervisor, Dave Morris.

It was delivered in support of Glendale's Corporate Social Responsibility commitment to Bolton at Home, as part of the company's contract to provide grounds maintenance services to the social housing provider.

Ceri McHugh, neighbourhood officer and Colin Hughes, team leader, from Bolton at Home were also on hand on the day to see the transformation take place.

Dave Morris, contract supervisor at Glendale, said: "Everyone at Glendale shares the same values, regardless of individual roles, and that's to improve outdoor spaces, create beautiful landscapes and help communities to be able to reap the benefits of the environment.

"The aim of the project was to create a usable, safe and friendly space for the residents of Johnson Fold Avenue to spend their time, as well as enhance the visual appeal of the estate.  It's great to see local people enjoying the space now it's complete."

Ceri McHugh, neighbourhood project officer at Bolton at Home, said: "We really appreciate the dedication and commitment shown by the volunteers from Glendale's local team to help make these improvements to the environment, in addition to their day jobs."
