We’re working with environmental charity Hubbub again on their latest roadside litter campaign, aiming to reduce the amount of rubbish on motorways and at service stations – with the help of comedian Vic Reeves!
As part of the #DriveDownLitter campaign, Hubbub have installed our Road Hog Roadside Litter Bins at a number of service stations to encourage road users to dispose of their litter correctly.
#DriveDownLitter is being backed by a range of partners including Highways England, Shell, Costa Express, Roadchef, and the 13 Kent councils across the Kent Resource Partnership. Comedian Vic Reeves, along with his wife, Nancy Sorrell, have also lent their support to this campaign.
The Road Hog Litter Bin features a large hooded top that directs litter into the bin, even when thrown from height or distance. This allows drivers to stay in their vehicles, making it ideal for lay-bys, service stations, drive-throughs and fast food establishments.
Manufactured from premium quality galvanised steel and powder coated for complete corrosion resistance, with high-vis chevron vinyl stickers to each side, which creates an eye-catching bin that can be seen in the dark and can’t be missed by motorists. The large capacity is ideal for busy environments, capable of housing a 140 litre wheelie bin (Vic Reeves not included).
The Road Hog has been designed based on feedback from Highways England, and that road users often throw rubbish from their vehicles, resulting in the areas surrounding the bin being left littered and untidy. According to a report by Hubbub, removing litter from motorways is estimated to cost £6 million a year, with more than 200,000 sacks of refuse collected annually.
Trewin Restorick, CEO of Hubbub, said: “Litter by our motorways is an eyesore, harms wildlife and is expensive and dangerous to remove. #DriveDownLitter brings together a unique partnership of organisations exploring whether we can change habits and cut littering.”
The six-month trial also includes the installation of the first ever ‘recycling reward’ machines in a UK service station, where visitors to Maidstone Services can exchange plastic bottles and coffee cups for money-off vouchers. If the six-month pilot proves successful, Hubbub hopes to expand the campaign across England’s 1,800 miles of motorways.
You can now see our Road Hog Bins at Maidstone and Folkestone services – read more about the campaign on Hubbub’s website!
