Knife-attack Hero Wins RoSPA Guardian Angel Award

18 Jul 2017

At a ceremony held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel, Mark Watts was awarded the RoSPA Guardian Angel Award 2017.

RoSPA, established the Guardian Angel Awards to recognise and celebrate the work of individuals who have gone 'above and beyond' to improve the safety of others. Someone who has shown commitment to safety and accident prevention through their personal initiative, diligence and enthusiasm.

These are certainly all things that can be attributed to Mark Watts.

Mark, a 25-year-old Carpenter employed by WM Housing Group, and a lone worker using a SoloProtect Identicom device, saved the life of a knife-attack victim as he drove home after an out of hours call out. It was this bravery, and intervention into the aftermath of a violent situation, that has seen him gain recognition from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

This isn’t the first time Mark has been recognised for his achievement, he has also been awarded an Outstanding Citizen Award for Bravery from the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner.

Paul Hammond, SoloProtect Sales Director, was quick to praise Mark for his quick thinking and selfless actions.

‘Mark’s brave intervention and speed of thought have most certainly saved someone’s life, we’re proud to be associated with him and just happy we could be there to support him during what had to be a very scary and stressful time.’

WM Housing are an excellent example of a company taking the duty of care to their employees seriously. Along with their SoloProtect lone worker solution they provide additional support and training in conflict management, in order to provide their workers with the necessary skills to deal with difficult situations appropriately.

Mark is one of close to 500 lone workers at WM Housing Group, using a SoloProtect, 24/7 alarm supported solution, featuring a discreet ID badge communications device to support any worker in distress, or on the receiving end of verbal abuse, aggression or incapacitation.
