McColl's has a long and rich history in retail; they're a leading community retailer serving the Convenience and Newsagent sectors with a strong national presence.

McColl's encompasses over 1700 stores, including over 1000 convenience stores, and they are the second largest multiple convenience operator in the UK.

With many McColl’s stores having lone workers it was clear to Alison Fagan, Corporate Health and Safety Manager at McColl’s, that the duty of care to their employees was of the utmost importance. As a result of this McColl’s now have a SoloProtect lone worker device in many of their stores.

The market leading Identicom lone worker device is the most widely-used dedicated device of its kind in the United Kingdom. Identicom is used by a wide-range of lone workers to reduce risks to their personal safety as they go about their daily working lives.

Benefits of the SoloProtect Solution:

McColl’s Implement SoloProtect Solution

There are many risks associated with lone working in the retail sector and it’s imperative that a company takes its duty of care seriously. This is especially prevalent in small format retail stores, with low staff numbers and late opening hours. Lone working takes place by key holders, staff in-store, during banking runs, by warehouse staff, delivery drivers and distribution operations; both locally and nationally.

Data collected by the BRC’s annual crime survey shows that verbal abuse and violence directed towards retail staff remains at an unacceptable level, with 41 incidents of violence and abuse per 1,000 employees in 2015, up from 32 the previous year. That's 123,000 incidents recorded, many of which were of 'non-physical abuse or aggressive behaviour'. However, 21 incidents per 1,000 employed (i.e. 63,000) were deemed to be violent.Identicom is the only lone worker device specifically designed as an identity card holder in order to be easy to wear and discreet to use. Containing mobile-phone (GSM) technology; in the event a worker requires assistance the device enables a 24/7 link to a state-of-art Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). It offers protection to staff who work alone and is designed to fit a range of personnel and lone worker applications; whether primarily facing 'People Risk' (arising from social interaction - potential verbal abuse and attack) or an 'Environmental Risk' (potential for incapacitation, commonly referred to as a 'Man Down' (incapacitation), due to illness or a sudden trip or fall).

Subsequently, with a mix of in-house staff training, and the implementation of the SoloProtect Identicom device, McColl’s have employed a lone worker solution as part of their duty of care.

McColl’s chose the SoloProtect Identicom device due to its discreet appearance and focus on staff protection. Following a successful trial, the McColl’s store employees were so impressed with the solution that they were reluctant to return their Identicom devices; many citing peace of mind and improved security as the main reasons.

The, BS8484 accredited, SoloProtect Identicom device is supported by an elite, EN50518 compliant, in-house ARC that uses the latest alarm handling technology to ensure that audio alarms from a are presented to our operators quickly and efficiently. Every second counts in a genuine 'Red Alert' situation; so enabling a highly trained operator to listen to, assess, and record, the lone worker alarm as soon as possible is imperative.

The SoloProtect Solution is designed to provide unparalleled lone worker protection, Alison Fagan stated:

“McColl’s is a company that takes the health and safety of its employees extremely seriously. Identicom has undoubtedly helped our staff feel safer, they know they can quickly raise an alarm if their safety was ever compromised. This has given our staff the confidence and peace of mind to carry out their tasks when working alone.”
