South East Electricity Substation Alliance (SEESA) is a member of the delivery organisation that National Grid are using to upgrade the electricity transmission grid and facilitate new connections to the network.The project is delivered through an alliance of three companies: Alstom Grid, Mott MacDonald and Skanska. SEESA is currently running ten sites with work that is valued at over £100m per year and is part of National Grid’s multi billion pound investment to make further improvements to the UK’s electricity network.

National Grid stipulated that all of its contractors should deliver a high level of performance across a range of rigorous criteria. A fundamental element of these requirements is to ensure all contractors must assess and monitor the competence of all site staff and this is where Mosaic comes into its own.

Prior to Mosaic, SEESA managed competence using spreadsheets and photocopied qualifications. Therefore, over time, implementing the Mosaic solution will significantly reduce the time and associated costs of competence management and greatly increase the validity and integrity of the data.

Kate Morris, Business Services Manager at SEESA along with a senior National Grid Health and Safety Manager in identifying a system that could help achieve these objectives. She states “We looked at a few systems but only Mosaic Management Systems was used significantly in construction and was site based rather than being driven by the information requirements of head office”.

Mosaic has helped SEESA record competence levels data and identify skill gaps against job specifications. It also flags up expiring qualifications so that training and assessments can be organised in plenty of time. Fundamentally, Mosaic helps SEESA to ensure skills and competency management is consistent.
