UKATA General Manager scoops Business Person of the Year Award

Double success at Derbyshire Times Business Awards.
The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) is celebrating double victory at the Derbyshire Times Business Awards on 10 November. An audience of local business leaders assembled at the Casa Hotel saw UKATA ‘Highly Commended’ in the Small Business of the Year category and UKATA General Manager Craig Evans named Business Person of the Year.
Held every year, The Derbyshire Times Business Awards recognise and celebrate the very best in local business and commerce and this double success is recognition of a highly successful 2016 for UKATA. The Markham Vale office has spearheaded a series of successful national initiatives, including Train Safe, Work Safe, Keep Safe; with UKATA members offering free asbestos awareness training to small businesses throughout the country.
“I am obviously delighted to have been named as Business Person of the Year,” said UKATA General Manager Craig Evans when commenting on the awards. “However, my award, and the commendation in the Business of the Year category are fitting recognition of all the hard work of both my colleagues and our members this year. It is a proud moment for me personally and UKATA collectively and certainly UKATA and I could have not made the progress we have this year without the backing of a great team.”
While UKATA is a national organisation with members throughout the UK, the Association does a great deal of work in the region, both on asbestos awareness and training and in support of local charities. Earlier this year Craig and colleague Sasha Brailsford’s charity skydive raised money for The British Lung Foundation, which contributed towards the donation of over £10,000 to the national charity. . UKATA also sponsored the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Chesterfield Volunteer Centre Awards this year, supporting their initiatives of working to promote volunteering across Derbyshire.
“At UKATA we recognise the importance of playing an active role in the local region, both in terms of asbestos awareness and supporting local charities,” added Craig. “It’s great these awards recognise the contribution of both individuals and organisations like UKATA in the local community. We joined Chesterfield Champions to support efforts to raise the profile of the town and these Awards demonstrated there are a lot of really impressive businesses and businesspeople operating in this area, and UKATA and I are proud to be among their number,” he concluded.

Olympic legend Kriss Akabusi to host UKATA 2018 Excellence Awards
Olympic track and field legend Kriss Akabusi MBE is set to host the UK Asbestos Training Association’s (UKATA) inaugural Excellence Awards.
Once a star of track and field, Kriss’ engaging personality, inspirational speaking style, and remarkable backstory has made him one the UK’s best-known sports personalities and TV presenters. At the black tie ceremony, which takes place on Friday 6 July at the Radisson Blu at East Midlands Airport, Kriss will present awards to six finalists.
UKATA General manager, Craig Evans, explained: “We are delighted to have Kriss Akabusi on board with our first ever UKATA Excellence Awards. His dedication, commitment and achievement throughout his career mirrors UKATA’s growth since it was set up in 2008.
Celebrating the Association’s 10th anniversary, the awards will recognise the member companies and individuals who have made an impact on UKATA and the wider asbestos industry.
Entries to the free-to-enter UKATA Excellence awards are open until Thursday 31 May. UKATA members can propose people and organisations in six categories – Advertising Campaign; Corporate Social Responsibility; Customer Service; Workforce Development; Training Initiative; and Innovation.
Craig urged: “You’ve got to be in it to win it so, I would urge all our members to enter and nominate. You are all doing wonderful work and deserve to be recognised; our Excellence Awards are the platform to do this.”

The glittering award ceremony follows UKATA’s Annual General Meeting and Asbestos Conference which will see a number of high profile guest speakers address more than 100 delegates.
Craig added: “The dinner dance and awards are a great opportunity to both share our success and recognise that of others in the industry. Together, we are ensuring more people are aware of, and combating the risks, of asbestos.
“I look forward to seeing everyone at the awards and drinking a toast to everything we have achieved in the industry together.”

UKATA commended for Campaign of the Year at SHE Awards in April
The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA), has been awarded a certificate of commendation for the Campaign of the Year, at the Safety and Health Excellence Awards on 11 April at VOX, Resorts World, Birmingham.
Hosted by Rory Bremner, the event saw UKATA join more than 400 of the UK’s leading specialists for an evening of networking that celebrates excellence in all things health and safety.
Train Safe, Work Safe, Keep Safe Campaign, delivered thousands of hours of free asbestos training to small business and sole traders nationwide. With asbestos still the biggest killer in the UK workplace, the campaign was conceived to offer free asbestos training to those who need it most yet are least likely to be aware of the dangers.
“Our campaign to spread awareness of and combat the risk of asbestos in the Train Safe, Work Safe, Keep Safe Campaign was given recognition for the significant improvement in health and safety intended. On a personal level, collecting the award on behalf of UKATA was a true honour, to receive official praise (outside of the organisation) for a campaign that I have been responsible for organising and managing, means a lot”. The awards were judged by a vastly experienced panel comprising many years’ experience in health and safety including the chief executive of NEBOSH Teresa Budworth, Neal Stone – former policy and standards director of the British Safety Council and Colin Webb advisor to Oxford University.
